Coverage questions, answered
Do travel eSIMs get worse coverage than local SIMs?
No; they connect to the same towers on the same licensed networks. What can differ is which network you land on (a plan riding the country's second-best network feels different in rural areas) and, on some budget plans, traffic priority at congested moments. Our country pages name the network each situation favors.
How do I know which local network my eSIM will use?
Every provider lists it on the plan page, usually under coverage or supported networks, before you pay. Match that against our country guide, which tells you whether that network is the one that matters for your route: AIS for the Thai islands, Telstra for the Australian outback, STC for Makkah.
Does 5G come included with travel eSIMs?
Usually, at no extra cost, wherever the local network offers it. 4G LTE is the practical floor everywhere we track. If a plan is 3G-only, that is a red flag from another era; none of the providers we compare sell those.
What are the most common coverage surprises?
The recurring ones: Switzerland missing from Europe regional plans, the UK missing post-Brexit, Monaco having its own network separate from France, mainland China's firewall not applying to Hong Kong, and national parks and deserts having no coverage on any network anywhere on earth.
