Every eSIM question, answered straight

24 real questions travelers ask, in plain language. If yours is missing, the answer probably lives in our guides.

The basics

What is an eSIM in one sentence?

A SIM card built into your phone as a chip, onto which you download a data plan by scanning a QR code instead of inserting plastic.

Do travel eSIMs give me a phone number?

Almost never; they are data-only. Your home number stays active in the phone for calls and texts, and WhatsApp keeps working normally on data. If you specifically need a local number for calls, a local physical SIM is the tool.

Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming?

For any trip past about three days, dramatically. Carrier roaming passes run 10-12 dollars per day; a two-week trip costs 140+ dollars versus a 10-25 dollar eSIM. Under two days, roaming's convenience can justify itself.

Are travel eSIMs legal and safe?

Completely. They are ordinary roaming agreements packaged for consumers; you connect to the same licensed local networks as everyone else. Payment goes through the provider you buy from, so pick the established names.

Installing and activating

When should I install my eSIM?

At home, on Wi-Fi, the night before you fly. Installation needs internet, and airport Wi-Fi at 1 a.m. is a bad time to discover a QR code problem.

When does the validity clock start?

For most providers, on first connection to a network abroad, not at installation. Check the plan's fine print; a minority start at purchase or install, which matters for plans bought weeks early.

Why do I need to turn data roaming ON for a travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs technically work by roaming onto local networks, so the eSIM line needs its roaming toggle on. This is the single most common cause of 'my eSIM does not work' panics. It does not cost extra; it is how the product functions.

Can I reinstall an eSIM if I delete it?

Usually no. Most travel eSIMs are single-install, and deleting one is like shredding a plastic SIM. Never delete an eSIM to 'clean up' mid-trip; archive or disable it instead.

My eSIM will not connect on landing. What is the fix sequence?

In order: confirm the eSIM's data roaming is on, confirm it is selected as the data line, restart the phone, manually select the partner network listed in your plan details, and check whether the provider app requires a manual activation tap. That sequence resolves the overwhelming majority of cases.

Using it abroad

Can I keep WhatsApp on my home number while using an eSIM?

Yes, and this is automatic. WhatsApp is tied to your registered number, not to which SIM carries data. Your chats continue exactly as before, using the eSIM's data.

Can I hotspot my laptop from a travel eSIM?

On most fixed-data plans from Airalo, Saily, Nomad and aloSIM, yes. Unlimited plans are the exception: Holafly and similar often cap or block tethering. If hotspotting is your main use, check the plan's tethering policy before buying.

Will I still receive OTP codes from my bank?

Yes, if you keep your home SIM active with data roaming off. Receiving texts is free on virtually all carriers even while abroad. This dual-SIM setup is exactly what travelers should run.

Does one eSIM work across multiple countries?

Country plans stop at the border. For multi-country trips, buy a regional plan (Europe, Asia, Middle East) or a global plan. Regional plans cost slightly more per GB and save you juggling three eSIMs on one itinerary.

What speeds do travel eSIMs get?

Whatever the local network offers, typically 4G LTE as the floor and 5G included at no extra cost in countries that have it. Some ultra-cheap plans deprioritize traffic at peak hours, which is the hidden cost of suspicious pricing.

Do travel eSIMs work on smartwatches and tablets?

Tablets and laptops with eSIM support: generally yes, same install process. Cellular smartwatches: no, they need carrier-specific plans tied to your home subscription.

Money matters

What happens when my data runs out?

Nothing dramatic; data simply stops. Every major provider sells top-ups in their app, applied in minutes. Top-ups sometimes cost more per GB than the original plan, which is why sizing correctly upfront with a 30 percent buffer is the better play.

Can I get a refund if the eSIM never worked?

The established providers refund unused or never-activated eSIMs with reasonable grace: Saily offers a 30-day window, Airalo refunds non-activated plans, Holafly refunds before activation. Keep screenshots of any error messages; they speed up support conversations enormously.

Why do prices for the same country differ so much between providers?

Different wholesale roaming agreements with different local networks. This is also why the cheapest provider changes from country to country, and why we compare per destination instead of crowning one winner.

Are the airport eSIM QR code kiosks a good deal?

They carry the same airport markup as physical SIM counters, typically two to three times online prices. The entire point of an eSIM is that no kiosk is involved; buy online before you fly.

Special cases

Do WhatsApp calls work in the UAE on an eSIM?

No; the UAE blocks VoIP calls at network level on every SIM type. Messages and voice notes work fine. Botim is the licensed local alternative for voice calls.

Does Google work on eSIMs in China?

Usually yes, and this is the best reason to use an eSIM there. Most travel eSIMs route Chinese traffic through Hong Kong or Singapore carriers, bypassing the firewall without a VPN. It is not officially guaranteed, so install a VPN as backup for longer stays.

I am going for Umrah or Hajj. Anything special to know?

Yes: the Nusuk app requires working data for permits, STC has the strongest network inside the Haram, and pilgrims use more data than tourists because of constant location sharing. Our dedicated Umrah and Hajj connectivity guide covers plan sizing and peak-crowd tactics.

My phone is eSIM-capable but the plan will not install. Why?

Carrier lock, almost always. Phones on installment plans reject foreign SIMs until unlocked. The other culprits: mainland-China model phones with eSIM disabled, and typos when entering activation codes manually.

eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi for a group trip?

For one or two people, eSIMs win on cost and convenience. For groups of three or more sharing one router all day, pocket Wi-Fi can compete on price, at the cost of carrying and charging another device that everyone must stay near.
