Dubai might be the most connected tourist city on earth, 5G in the metro, the malls, the desert safari camps and 828 meters up the Burj Khalifa. The catch is price (airport SIMs are aggressively expensive) and the VoIP block: WhatsApp calls don't work on any network, eSIM included. Plan around both and Dubai is effortless.

DXB's du and Etisalat counters charge AED 100-150 for tourist packs, among the world's priciest airport SIMs. The metro from Terminal 1/3 has full 5G, so an installed eSIM has you navigating before the first Emirates ad finishes playing on the concourse screens.
Mobile coverage in Dubai: what to expect
Flawless. Etisalat and du blanket every district in 5G, Marina, Downtown, the Palm, Deira's souks, plus the full metro (driverless and underground through the center), and even desert safari camps 45 minutes into the dunes. The Burj Khalifa observation decks have 5G at the top.
Dubai data tips from the ground
- WhatsApp calls are blocked UAE-wide; texts and media work fine. Install Botim (the licensed VoIP app) before arrival if you need voice calls home, or just voice-note like the locals.
- The Dubai Metro's gold/regular class check and Careem/Uber bookings run all day on data, budget 250MB+ daily; this is not a light-usage city.
- Desert safaris keep signal most of the route on Etisalat, the dune-bashing videos upload from the camp's shisha tent.

Do WhatsApp calls really not work in Dubai, even on an eSIM?
Correct, the UAE blocks VoIP calling at network level on every SIM type. WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work normally; live calls don't connect. Botim is the licensed workaround, or use your hotel Wi-Fi with a VPN (a legal gray zone many travelers use quietly).
Is there signal on desert safaris and at the Burj Khalifa top?
Yes to both, Etisalat covers the main safari dune areas near Al Awir and the Burj's At the Top decks have full 5G. Dubai treats coverage as a national pride matter.
How much data for a 4-day Dubai stopover?
2-3GB does it: metro navigation, Careem rides, restaurant hunting and heavy photo uploads. Mall and hotel Wi-Fi everywhere takes the evening load.
